Sara changed into a simple T-shirt and another pair of cargo pants. He kept his eyes on the road and off her while she did. His head was too full of the threats awaiting them. After a few hours, though, he knew he couldn’t drive straight through to Somerset today. She was exhausted, and if he were honest, so was he. He hadn’t slept last night. He’d been too filled with regrets and too hyped-up on the mission to chance closing his eyes. With sleep would have come the endless circling of what-ifs. Now he didn’t have to worry over that. He knew what if. What if her house blew up? What if Potter got in? What if…?

His phone buzzed and he pulled it free without disturbing her. She’d finally fallen asleep, her head pillowed near his thigh, her legs curled up to her chest like a child.

He opened the messages and blinked a few times until the odd text made sense. Cindy. He couldn’t place her until he remembered Motivic, a buddy in New York wanting to introduce him to a girl down south, some hometown sweet thing Motivic swore would fit him perfectly. His buddy had no clue. The only woman that would fit was sleeping safe and sound next to him. He ignored the text. The ins and outs of texting etiquette escaped him—at least Jansen always said it did.

“Oh.” Sara sat up, slowly stretching. “Sorry, I really didn’t mean to fall asleep on you.”

“I take that as a compliment, don’t worry.”

“A compliment?”

“Yeah, you’re beginning to trust me, although why the…why you do is beyond me.”

“You can swear, you know, just not at me. And I trust you to keep me safe. You have so far.”

He gave her a glance for the permission to swear, but shook his head at the rest. She stretched her arms over her head and yawned. “I’ve been lucky so far. Can you hand me one of those bottles of water? There’s some in the ice chest in the back.”

“Sure.” She got up onto her knees and bent over the seats. It was a view he wasn’t likely to forget. Sitting back down, she smiled, then handed him a water. “Want me to drive?”

“Can you?”

“Uh, duh, of course I can.”

He sipped his water and considered it. “If you drive, we might make Somerset tonight.”

“Is that in Kentucky?”

“Yeah. It’s on Lake Cumberland.”

“Okay, I can drive. It’s not rocket science.”

He laughed at that. “I don’t know. My truck’s pretty advanced.”

“It’s a truck. Don’t tell me you’re macho and think women can’t drive.”

“Of course, I’m macho,” he teased. “But I’m also damn tired. If you’re up to it, I’ll hand over the controls at the next gas station. You keep it rolling and let me get some shut eye and we might be resting on an island resort tonight.”

She tucked her hair behind her ear and smiled. Her hair seemed to naturally fall to the side, often in her eyes, but more often, she hooked it back behind her left ear.
